Course Aim
A student will learn to:
- count forwards and backwards by 1s, from any two-digit number, with fluency
- identify a number before and after any two-digit number
- read and use ordinal names to at least 'thirty-first'
Prior Knowledge
Some knowledge of and skill with:
- reading and representing numbers up to 20 using objects, pictures, words and numerals
Prep/Kindy - Whole Numbers - Reading Numbers to 20 - counting, making correspondences, comparing, and ordering collections of objects up to 20
Prep/Kindy - Whole Numbers - Collections to 20
Sound knowledge of and skill with:
- counting in sequence up to 30, naming numbers up to 20, and reading ordinal numbers up to '10th'
Prep/Kindy - Whole Numbers - Counting to 30
Time Allocation
5 lessons, approximately 1 hour each
- Warm Up and Lesson: approximately 40 - 45 minutes
- Extra Practice: approximately 15 - 20 minutes
NB: One hour is a very long time for little ones. You may like to cap each lesson to half an hour with plenty of brain breaks when necessary. You may like to alternate between lessons and their Extra Practice activities over two days.

Please model and encourage the use of the following vocabulary when working through this unit:

- number line
- number chart
- zero
- ones
- groups of ten
- tens
- round to
- please be aware that cardinal numbers (1,2,3) are said without place value language for bus, postcode and telephone numbers
- ordinal names can be confused with fraction names; 'the third' relates to positional order whereas 'a third' is a fraction
- the word 'round' can hold different meanings, and it can often be confused with the word 'around'relates to positional order whereas 'a third' is a fraction
