Lesson 1: Counting (0-50)

Preparation

Let's warm up by counting to 30! Take note of how the carriages are lined up into three equal rows. What order of operation is mentioned?

Click on one or more of the following activities to practice what you have just learned. You do not have to complete all of them, just choose an activity or two that appeals to you!

  • Sort the space rocks into numerical order, from the lowest to highest number
  • Count by 1's and work through four levels of numbers (up to 40)
  • Challenge: Can you try counting by 2s? You may need a hundred chart to help you

  • Play 'Direct' or 'In Between' games to revise your numbers up to 30

  • This is not like your traditional dot to dot here
  • Pick one of the options so that you can practice counting numbers between 20 to 50
  • Please note, there is an animation of a hand directing you to select the second number in the sequence first; so instead of pressing 1, press the number 2 so that dot 1 joins up to dot 2

  • Use a hundred chart and your counting skills to fill in the missing numbers of each box
  • Remember, you will need to count forwards and backwards on this sheet

  • Copy from another chart, or test your memory and counting skills
  • Colour the chart in once you are finished counting

  • Pick any set with numerals (1,2,3 etc), and print a set that goes up to 100
  • Practice number recognition from 0-50 in random order
  • Place the cards in order on the floor to make a giant 50 card long snake
  • Place the cards out in rows of ten to make a fifty chart
  • Identify the number before and after any number
  • Discuss any patterns with the numbers you see; how to the tens and ones change in each row and column?

  • Print the snakes and ladders game for numbers up to 50
  • Roll a dice and move a marker up each number until you reach 50
  • Play in pairs or small groups to turn this game into a race
  • If you land on a ladder, climb it to skip numbers, if you land on a snake, slide down it to go back over some previous numbers
Whack a Mole - ICT Games
  • Whack the moles! Count forwards in steps of 1 starting at 0
  • Have a go at starting from a number other than 1
  • Toggle the switch from 'FWD' to 'BWD' to count backwards from 50
  • You may need adult assistance to get started
